The M-21 is the close ratio 4-speed. It was used on high performance models with numerically high rear end ratios. The M-22 was the "rock crusher". It had the same gear ratios as the M-21. The VIN is stamped on the tranny. The location may have varied. I haven't looked at mine in a while, so maybe someone else could be more specific.

I do not claim to be a transmission expert and could be wrong but the "real" rock crushers had straight cut gears....not helical cut gears. I believe they were first released by GM in 1969 or 1970.
